Meaning and Distinctions
What are obsessive thoughts?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a condition where repetitive behaviors or mental rituals, performed to reduce unwanted obsessive thoughts and anxiety, consume significant time and limit daily functioning. It is distinguished from simple meticulousness, and the role of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy is clearly defined; Korean medicine treatment addresses accompanying burdens such as sleep, tension, and digestion. Rather than attempting to completely eliminate the thoughts, the goal is to continue professional treatment while reducing the time lost to repetitive behaviors and the burden on sleep. Priority is given to psychiatric treatment in cases of thoughts of self-harm, impaired reality testing, nutritional or skin damage, or obsessions so severe that the patient cannot leave the house. Obsessive thoughts refer to thoughts, impulses, or images that recur involuntarily and cause significant anxiety or discomfort.
