Meaning and Distinctions
What is burnout?
Burnout is a term used to describe exhaustion related to occupational or caregiving stress; it is not a diagnostic name for all forms of lethargy. Depression, insomnia, anemia, thyroid issues, post-infection fatigue, and the effects of medication are checked first. Then, emotional exhaustion, detachment, and reduced professional efficacy are organized based on real-life scenarios. Rather than simply expecting to return to normal after a vacation, sleep, diet, work boundaries, and a recoverable level of activity are redesigned. Symptoms suggesting thoughts of self-harm, severe weight loss, fever, chest pain, fainting, or mania are not explained as burnout. Burnout refers to a state of feeling severe exhaustion, detachment, and decreased performance under prolonged burdens such as work or caregiving.
